The E-mazing Race challenges Participants to collect as many points as possible before the end of the contest on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at 1300 hours PDT. Participants are encouraged to start from the official launch location and unite at the finale celebration; but vehicles can start and finish anywhere in North America – collecting points during contest period (1300 hrs ADT, May 27, 2015 to 1300 hrs PDT, June 24, 2015).
Race details are subject to changes. Please visit www.e-mazingrace.com regularly to be aware of updates.
Start Location(s): A registered vehicle can start from anywhere in North America. E-Mazing Race 2015 will hold one official starting line in Halifax, Nova Scotia. E-Mazing Race 2015 has teamed with Electric Mobility Canada (EMC) to start the race from EMC’s EV2015VÉ Conference (taking place at The Westin Nova Scotian). At conference closing, E-Mazing Race 2015 will launch from the Port of Halifax parking lot near Cunard Circle, 1215 Marginal Road, at 1300 hrs ADT, Wednesday, May 27, 2015.
Participants are encouraged to gather at the official launch. Extra points are provided to racers who check-in at the start line. SCH chargers throughout Halifax and at EV2015VÉ will have higher point values.
Participants can also create their own events and local competitions to enjoy the race in a smaller format.
Staggered Start: All vehicles will be released at 5-minute intervals from the organized start location. If necessary, vehicle order will be based on a draw – selecting participant numbers out of a hat.
Eligibility: The E-Mazing Race Contest (“Contest”) is open to all participants with a plug-in electric powered vehicle (“EV”) capable of charging with a J1772 connector. Plug-In hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) will compete in a separate category against other PHEVs (examples include: Chevy Volt, Toyota Prius and Via Motors VTRUX).
Charging Stations: Charging at all charging stations is on a first-come-first-serve basis. To reduce bottlenecks, participants driving EVs will have priority over PHEV participants at charging stations. This is critical to keep the event fair and flowing. We thank you for your cooperation.
Safety Above All Else: Despite the Contest Name, E-mazing Race is NOT a race but rather a rally which inspires participants to tour the continent. All Participants must operate their vehicles within the confines of the law and observe safe driving practices. Safety should always come first. E-mazing Race does not condone any reckless or unlawful driving/ behavior, and therefore any sign of such will result in immediate disqualification.
Participant’s Obligations: It is the Participant’s responsibility to ensure that their vehicle is registered and safe to operate on public highways in all states and provinces in North America. Passing an event technical inspection does not mean the vehicle is legal on public highways. Only the vehicle’s owner and/or operator can determine that, and/or relevant public legal authority.
Proof of insurance and current government registration with displayed current license plates (or “temporary tags”) are required for entry and must be valid in all jurisdictions that the vehicle will be operated in.
Participants are responsible for their own costs and expenses associated with their participation in the Contest.
Participants are responsible for their own smartphone device and the costs associated with its operation in order to use the SCH Navigator App which manages the E-mazing Race.
Scoring System: Participants will be judged using a points-based scoring system. Each participant must register their visits to Sun Country Highway EV Charging Stations and collect the most points to win the event. Charger points are awarded based on location of the EV Charger; with “out of the way” and pre-determined locations receiving higher points. Extra points are awarded for start line and finish line participation. Participants will use a smartphone to register their location and points. Participants must download the Sun Country Highway Navigator App then register for E-mazing Race 2015 (EMR) on the app. Participants must take a picture of their vehicle and/or themselves in front of each EV charger and post it on the SCH App when “checking in” at a charger. The App check-ins will also be used to track racers on a map and place them on a scoreboard. Scoring will be updated daily on the SCH Navigator App and E-Mazing Race website. Results will be summarized at the Finish Line event. Official scoring will be announced and posted within 14 days of contest closing.
Participants are responsible for their check-ins. There is no recourse for check-ins that don’t get recorded. Sun Country Sustainability Fund and Sun Country Highway shall not be responsible for incorrect or inaccurate check-ins due to technical error or other causes.
Participants may only register one time (1x) at each host location during the race to receive points. Locations with more than one charger will give points for each individual charging station. The photo at check-in will capture the Participant’s unique identity and GPS location as they visit each Sun Country Highway EV Charging Station.
Prior to race launch; bonus points will be assigned to key regions and sponsor locations across North America. Participants who join start and finish line events will receive bonuses. EMR 2015 will highlight Atlantic Canada with a start from Halifax, Nova Scotia offering bonuses as well as incentives to travel to the eastern-most starting points in Newfoundland and PEI. Chargers across those provinces will have higher point values.

Whistler, BC, Wednesday June 24, 2015 1300 hrs (PDT). Location to be announced.

Participants who travel the furthest, visit the most Sun Country Highway EV chargers, take advantage of bonuses and accumulate the most overall points, will have the greatest probability of winning the race. Points are awarded for every EV Charger visited as well as bonus points for joining Race activities. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finalists in the race. Secondary prizes are available to the Participant that posts the most creative photo(s) during the tour and the top scoring short-range EV (under 200 km). What is the advantage of signing up as a VIP?
VIP racers receive a VIP packge with their $39 registration fee. The pack includes a tote bag, lanyard, vehicle decal and t-shirt. VIP registrants will also receive some additional website and event recognition.
What if I don’t own an EV, should I sign-up?
Definitely! Even if you sign-up you aren’t obligated to drive or check-in at any Sun Country Highway chargers. Your registration can be symbolic, supporting EV adoption and green infrastructure in North america.
There is more than one person in our EV, can we both sign-up?
You can both sign-up, but only one person per vehicle can win a prize, so make sure all of your check-ins are under one registrant/participant. Think of it as your EV being the actual participant, not each person in the vehicle.
I’m not able to travel from PEI to Whistler, can I still participate?
You can, and you should! Just travel in your area, or to/from any location that you choose. Chart your own course and make the race your own adventure. The trip from PEI to whistler is just an option we’ve provided, and is not at all mandatory.
Are there different ‘classes’ or race divisions?
There are. We have a few different categories that will win prizes. The top 3 racers with the most points, the racer who submits/checks-in with the most creative photo, and the top short-range EV (under 200km).
Can anyone attend launch events?
Yes, all E-mazing Race events are free and for all ages. Stop by and meet the racers and learn more about EVs and EV infrastructure. We want to see as many people as possible at our events, but it’s not mandatory.
